And then we also have them evaluate every teammate on whether or not they were living each core value, and we did it on a 4 point scale, sort of like a GPA, so 4 is obviously a 4.0, its an A average, so 4 is an extraordinary example of this core value. And of course hes nodding and hes not contradicting anyone. And so if I tell them theyre, you know, utterly uncoachable what Im saying is every time I tell you this, you know, you, your reaction to it tells me you just dont think that thats what they should be doing, and your fight with me in this area is going to prevent you from reaching your potential. Because obviously if I want to be protected from the chaos of the universe and Im a player in this environment, who are the people that are going to completely agree with anything you tell them on tell them on the problem? So if a kid comes in and they havent done very well that season, and this is a post season review, they all have a protective narrative thats usually, in my environment, organized and I guess constructed in a loop with their parents. Ive learned the lesson that some people just dont want to be in my culture. And I absolutely loved everything in his book. Were sending our top athletes all over the place and a lot of that is because they are living the core values in the most positive way and Im writing that into the recommendation. Anson: Self-belief. Our values have shaped our culture over many years, and now we just need to illustrate them with some nice quotations for everyone to memorize. They get to see exactly where they are on it. Now, the way we raise our kids, as we spend every single day ass-kissing all of them, they have no sense of authority because they know their parents are full of crap. And this has served me better than any other piece of advice I have ever been given in leadership and coaching in my life. Anson: And if the kid treated the parents poorly he wouldnt offer them a scholarship because obviously if the kid doesnt treat the parents poorly the kids not going to treat him well or his culture well. So we stole this idea, we soccer-ized it, we took it to a new level. He says one factor is 12 Core Values. And so I want to sort of leave that with all of you, but I am not an authority on this, please, I am just a womens soccer coach at the university of North Carolina. Anson: Well, basically I had this girlI shared the data with her, and shes sitting across from me in cold silence, and Im thinking oh, my gosh, I shouldnt have shared this with her. Their parents love them out of this diluted feeling that, Im going to build my kids self-esteem by telling them how wonderful they are when theyre not. And now all of a sudden, I have to deal with these kids. Menu. I love the accountability of it. Our test is the game we just played or the game we have to play next. Anson: We do it early in the fall. Heres what were going to do. And its an article written about this woman that attended Columbia University, and she was sent there to study for a Ph.D. in Russian literature and Russian poetry. And of course your mom totally agrees with you. language of the media and the world by saying you lead by example. And in changing that and sending then in the right direction all of a sudden a substandard player goes to a different level because now shes finally accountable for performance, whereas earlier she had a narrative that protected her from being responsible and accountable, and now all of a sudden we expose that, and now shes selected to be more accountable and her game goes to a completely different level. And of course you hire Millennials. Anson: Well, its hit or miss, I mean. So what I tried 1 year is I said listen, the press is going to call me next year and theyre going to ask me who my leaders are, and Im going to sort of mention all of your names. And but heres the dilemma for us. So anyway, we got her to shut up and we made a nice run. Anson: Well, actually, I mean, Ive got a lot of others that I can throw out there for you, because let me tell you about potential. And then she said, and this is a wonderful backhand compliment, she said, you know, after I played for you, I felt like a play for anyone. Maybe you can let us in on the secret. So if we have 30 players in the roster, in the 28 different categories everyones ranked from 1 to 30. I mean, I absolutely hate it. I will never be negative about a persons constructed confidence, and I will never judge them on it. And then she doesnt feel inferior, because she knows the top 4 are extraordinary. But now they get to rank themselves in 7 out of the 8 categories that were going to review. Each year the players grade themselves and their teammates on the extent to which they embody the core values. That 10 year lawsuit was a part of it, but also Jack Welch, one of the great business people of all time, convinced me of this as well. Anson: Well, actually, Im reading all the time, but most of the ideas we bring in practice dont come directly from the reading, they just come from us looking at this thinking you know what, this isnt working. And one of the things Ive seen recently is that we, in fact we did a study on this and found that 47% of corporate America does not know their organizations core values, which, if you think about it, on one hand is extremely surprising. And so I had all these ridiculous core values that I was expecting everyone to live by, but no one really lived by them except if it was a coincidence. And weve made all kinds of mistakes on this because originally we would actually share where they ranked among the 30 players in character, and that, you know, I didnt think ended up being very positive. I mean, thats why it drives me nuts, you know, when I look at all these different people that claim to be developing leaders. He would calmly nod and make it seem like he was agreeing with the person, and then in a very calm and mature voice just say well, your moral imperative is not this substandard employee, your moral imperative is that extraordinary, you know, widow thats trying to live on basically her investment in your company. And Ive learned that youre not going to change everyone. One is that I am going to improve by trying to beat everyone to death and every single minute of every single practice, but also the other kids will benefit from that because in order to deal with me, they have to raise their competitive level as well. You can just make. I loved him speaking to all of the athletic coaches on the campus. I am a member of a conservative church. Then finally, its their soccer success. And what he was telling us is who we are trying to recruit, and who we are trying to train right now. Some want to be exempt. And even in their review of where they stand in self-discipline, competitive fire, self-belief, love of the ball, love of playing the game, love of watching the game, grit and coachability, with basically 2 exceptionswell, actually, with just 1 exceptionevery one of their grades is their own, so when they average it out they are doing their own evaluation. They have to get a sense of their relationship with you that you appreciate the fact they are different. And now youre ranked from one to 15.
