We have found that some of the most remarkable symbiotic phenotypes have evolved convergently many times in Staphylinidae, often in distantly related lineages. Their work is integrative, combining genomics and developmental biology with chemical ecology and behavioural neuroscience to explore all facets of the ant-beetle interaction and its evolutionary basis. Joseph rejoined Northrop Grumman Corp., Space Sector in 2020, where he is a team member of several Civilian and Nationals Security Space Missions. He has established a unique model system to address this question: rove beetles that live symbiotically inside colonies of ants and termites. From this ancestral lifestyle, however, hundreds of lineages have transformed into remarkable symbiotic organisms, specialized for life as impostors inside the complex societies of ants.
